Beta vulgaris ‘Boltardy’ is a popular beetroot variety. Beetroot (Beta vulgaris) is an easy-to-grow vegetable that makes it perfect for beginner gardeners. The roots are usually cylindrical or globe-shaped and come in various colors, including darkest purple-red, pink, yellow, and even white.

Boltardy Variety

Roots

Boltardy’ produces dark red, round roots that are sweet-flavored. Unlike some other varieties, it doesn’t have rings in the flesh.

Bolt Resistance

As the name suggests, it’s bolt-resistant, meaning it’s less likely to prematurely flower (bolt) and suppress root growth.

Sowing Time

For the earliest crops, sow ‘Boltardy’ undercover as soon as the soil warms up at the start of the year. Later crops can be lifted in late autumn and stored in sand for use during winter.

Harvest

Harvest the roots when they are young (no bigger than a golf ball). Don’t forget the leaves! Young greens can be used in salads, and older leaves can be blanched like spinach.

Award of Garden Merit

The Royal Horticultural Society has given ‘Boltardy’ its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM)
